Nvidia Eyes $500M Investment in Self-Driving Tech Startup Wayve
Nvidia is doubling down on its bet in autonomous driving with plans to invest $500 million into U.K.-based self-driving startup Wayve. This potential investment is part of Nvidia’s wider £2 billion ($2.6 billion) commitment to accelerate the country’s AI startup ecosystem.
Wayve, founded in 2017, has gained significant traction for its unique self-learning autonomous driving system. Unlike traditional rules-based systems, Wayve’s approach relies on end-to-end neural networks that learn from real-world driving data. This allows its technology to adapt without relying on high-definition maps or specialized sensors, making it highly attractive to automakers.
The startup already integrates Nvidia’s GPUs into its platforms. Its Gen 2 system powered Ford Mach-E test vehicles, while the newly unveiled Gen 3 platform uses Nvidia’s Drive AGX Thor. This advancement will enable Level 4 driverless features for both highways and city streets.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang personally tested Wayve’s technology on London’s busy streets and described the company as a potential “next trillion-dollar company.” With investors like Accel, Hoxton Ventures, and Balderton also backing the AI ecosystem, Wayve is well positioned to lead the future of autonomous driving and embodied AI.
As Wayve works towards closing its Series D round, Nvidia’s strategic investment highlights a growing synergy between AI computing power and self-driving innovation.
