Quartermaster Raises $43M to Build a “Hive Mind” for Ships
Oceans are vast, and tracking activity on them has always been a challenge for governments, shipping companies, and insurance providers. Many ships lack modern sensors and analytics software, leaving large gaps in maritime intelligence.
Arlington, Virginia-based startup Quartermaster is changing that with its innovative solution called SmartMast. This package includes weather-hardened sensors like cameras and radios installed on a ship’s mast, relaying real-time maritime data. Combined with an advanced analytics platform, SmartMast creates a continuous, distributed sensing network—essentially a “hive mind” for millions of ships.
Why SmartMast is a Game-Changer
Current systems like AIS (Automatic Identification System) are basic and vulnerable. AIS relies on self-reported location pings, which can be easily spoofed or disabled. According to Quartermaster CEO Neil Sobin, SmartMast is more secure and reliable, offering unprecedented transparency on the high seas.
“In maritime, AIS is a completely broken system. You can take advantage of just how fragile it is,” Sobin said.
With over 600 ships already using SmartMast, covering more than 10 million square miles of ocean, the startup is building a foundation for intelligence applications. These include:
- Identifying other ships
- Training data for marine autonomy companies
- Supporting scientific research and robotics
- Providing insights to governments and regulators
SmartMast has also already assisted in over 20 rescues at sea, demonstrating its real-world impact and value to mariners.
$43M Funding to Expand Technology
Quartermaster recently raised $43 million in a Series A funding round, co-led by First Round Capital and Quiet Capital. The funds will primarily support hiring engineers to advance the technology further. Sobin believes the ocean offers untapped opportunities in computer vision and AI applications, allowing engineers to make significant impacts in a relatively short time.
“The ocean has so much low-hanging fruit in computer vision tasks,” Sobin said.
The Future of Maritime Intelligence
Quartermaster’s vision goes beyond individual ships. By creating a networked ecosystem, it’s reshaping how maritime operators, scientists, and governments understand and act on ocean data. With growing adoption, SmartMast could become a standard for maritime safety, efficiency, and intelligence worldwide.
