Patina Startup Is Reinventing the Fragrance Industry With AI-Powered Scent Technology
The fragrance industry has remained largely unchanged for decades. Traditional perfume and scent creation still rely on a limited number of specialized laboratories that develop fragrance molecules for major perfume houses and cosmetic brands. But now, a young startup called Patina is bringing artificial intelligence and molecular science into the world of scent innovation.
The company recently raised $2 million in funding from investors including Betaworks and True Ventures. With this funding, Patina plans to transform how perfumes, flavors, and fragrances are created.
Patina’s Mission to Modernize Fragrance Technology
Founded by Sean Raspet and Laura Sisson, Patina combines machine learning, molecular design, and scent research to create entirely new scent molecules.
The founders met at a scent art gallery in New York City in 2024. Raspet was showcasing newly created molecules, while Sisson was building olfactory learning models. Their shared interest in human senses and smell science eventually led to the creation of Patina.
The startup is currently developing a foundation model called Sense1, designed to replicate how scent receptors in the human nose work. Their goal is ambitious — to create what they call the “first universal code of smell and taste.”
How AI Is Changing the Fragrance Industry
Traditionally, scents are described using broad terms like “floral,” “woody,” or “fresh.” However, these descriptions vary across cultures, languages, and regions. Patina wants to solve this problem by understanding scent at the biological receptor level.
Using AI and computational modeling, the company can:
- Design never-before-smelled fragrance molecules
- Recreate rare natural scents synthetically
- Develop custom fragrances faster
- Reduce dependence on expensive natural ingredients
- Improve sustainability in perfume manufacturing
This technology could significantly change the global perfume and flavor market.
Sustainable Alternatives to Natural Ingredients
One major challenge in the fragrance industry is the rising cost and limited supply of natural ingredients like rose oil and exotic plant extracts. Climate conditions and supply-chain issues are making these ingredients harder to source.
Patina’s AI-powered molecules can biologically simulate the smell of natural materials without requiring plant extraction. According to the founders, these synthetic alternatives use less water, fewer petrochemicals, and generate lower carbon emissions compared to traditional extraction methods.
This makes AI-generated fragrance molecules both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.
Competing With Fragrance Industry Giants
Patina is entering a market dominated by global fragrance companies like Givaudan and Symrise. Emerging startups like Osmo are also exploring AI-driven scent innovation.
However, Patina believes its focus on receptor-level scent modeling gives it a competitive advantage.
The company is already discussing partnerships with major fragrance houses and fashion brands interested in developing custom signature scents.
AI Makes Fragrance Development Faster
In the past, creating new fragrance molecules could take years and required expensive laboratory research. Only large fragrance corporations had the resources to develop patented scent ingredients at scale.
Artificial intelligence is now changing that process.
Patina says AI allows smaller startups to create and test new fragrance ingredients in weeks rather than years. This opens new opportunities for independent perfume creators, beauty brands, and flavor companies to develop unique products more efficiently.
The startup also believes AI can reduce animal testing by accurately predicting human skin reactions through computational models.
Building the “Pantone for Scent”
Patina’s long-term vision is to build what founder Sean Raspet describes as a “Pantone for scent”, a universal reference system for smells and flavors.
Similar to how the Pantone system standardizes colors across industries, Patina wants to identify the core scent molecules that can be combined to recreate any smell or flavor imaginable.
If successful, this could completely reshape fragrance development, perfume branding, flavor science, and sensory technology.
The Future of AI in Sensory Science
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming industries far beyond software and automation. Patina’s work demonstrates how AI can unlock new possibilities in biology, chemistry, and human sensory research.
As consumer demand grows for safer, sustainable, and personalized fragrances, startups like Patina may become major innovators in the future of scent technology.
The fragrance industry has not seen major disruption in nearly fifty years. With advanced AI models and molecular science, Patina is positioning itself as one of the startups leading the next generation of fragrance innovation.
