Nuro Secures Driverless Permit for Lucid Robotaxis Ahead of Uber’s 2026 Launch
The race toward fully autonomous transportation is accelerating. Nuro has taken a major step forward by receiving approval to test driverless vehicles on public roads in California. This milestone brings Uber closer to launching its premium robotaxi service, powered by next-generation electric vehicles from Lucid Motors.
Nuro’s Driverless Testing Milestone
The California Department of Motor Vehicles has officially expanded Nuro’s existing permit, allowing the company to test autonomous Lucid Gravity SUV vehicles without a human driver behind the wheel. While Nuro has held a driverless permit for years, it was previously limited to low-speed delivery vehicles. This new approval marks a significant upgrade in capability and ambition.
However, Nuro has clarified that testing will not begin immediately. The company plans to start driverless operations later this year, taking a cautious approach to ensure safety and system reliability.
Uber’s Vision for Premium Robotaxi Services
Uber is heavily investing in autonomous mobility to reshape urban transportation. The company has significantly expanded its partnership with Lucid, increasing its investment and vehicle orders. Initially committing $300 million and 20,000 vehicles, Uber has now raised its investment to $500 million, with plans to deploy at least 35,000 robotaxis.
These vehicles will include thousands of Lucid Gravity SUVs, along with additional EVs built on Lucid’s upcoming mid-size platform. All will be equipped with Nuro’s advanced autonomous driving system.
Advanced Technology Powering the Future
At the heart of these robotaxis is cutting-edge technology powered by Nvidia. Nuro’s system uses the Nvidia Drive AGX Thor computing platform, enabling real-time decision-making and navigation.
The Lucid Gravity robotaxis are designed with a robust sensor suite, including:
- High-resolution cameras
- Solid-state lidar sensors
- Advanced radar systems
These technologies work together to help the vehicle understand and respond to real-world driving conditions with precision.
Regulatory Challenges Still Ahead
Despite this progress, several regulatory hurdles remain. Nuro must secure additional approvals, including a driverless ride-hailing permit from the California Public Utilities Commission and a final deployment permit from the DMV.
Currently, testing continues with human safety operators inside the vehicles. Uber has even begun limited trials where employees can request autonomous rides via its app, though a driver remains present for safety.
Road to 2026 Robotaxi Launch
Lucid has already delivered dozens of engineering vehicles to support testing across multiple U.S. cities. According to company updates, commercial robotaxi operations are expected to begin by late 2026.
However, initial deployments may still include limitations, such as safety operators or restricted service areas, depending on regulatory approvals. Even so, industry leaders remain optimistic as development and certification processes continue to move forward.
What This Means for the Future
This collaboration between Nuro, Uber, and Lucid signals a major shift in the transportation industry. As autonomous technology matures, robotaxis could redefine how people commute, reduce costs, and improve efficiency in urban mobility.
The journey to fully driverless services is complex, but each milestone brings us closer to a future where self-driving vehicles become part of everyday life.
