Apple Opens New Doors for AI Agents with Poke

Apple has officially approved Poke, an AI-powered assistant developed by The Interaction Company of California, as the first AI agent to operate on its Messages for Business platform. This milestone marks a significant step in the evolution of conversational AI and highlights Apple’s growing interest in integrating AI-powered experiences into its ecosystem.

The announcement comes just ahead of Apple’s highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where the company is expected to reveal new AI-focused innovations and upgrades.

What Is Poke?

Launched in March, Poke is designed to make AI assistance accessible to everyday users through simple text conversations. Unlike advanced AI systems that often require technical expertise, Poke works through familiar messaging platforms, allowing users to interact with AI as easily as sending a text message.

Users can rely on Poke for a variety of everyday tasks, including:

  • Daily planning and scheduling
  • Calendar management
  • Health and fitness tracking
  • Smart home control
  • Photo editing assistance
  • General information and productivity support

Since its launch, Poke has reportedly facilitated more than 100 million messages, demonstrating strong user adoption and growing interest in AI-powered personal assistants.

Poke Now Supports iMessage

Before receiving Apple’s approval, Poke was available through SMS, Telegram, and WhatsApp in selected markets. The new approval allows the AI assistant to operate directly through iMessage via Apple’s Messages for Business platform.

Traditionally, Messages for Business was built for organizations such as airlines, retailers, hotels, and service providers to communicate with customers. The platform enabled appointment scheduling, customer support, and information sharing through iMessage.

Poke’s approval changes that dynamic by introducing a third-party AI agent into the ecosystem, creating new opportunities for AI-driven customer interactions.

A New Business Opportunity for Apple

One of the most interesting aspects of this partnership is the business model behind it.

According to Poke co-founder Marvin von Hagen, Apple charges the startup on a per-user basis for access to the platform. While the exact pricing remains undisclosed, von Hagen noted that Apple’s fees are significantly lower than some competing AI messaging platforms.

This approach could create a valuable new revenue stream for Apple as AI agents become more widely adopted. At the same time, it introduces a new cost factor that AI startups must consider when building and scaling their products.

As AI-powered services continue to expand, platform access fees may become a standard part of the AI economy.

Meeting Apple’s Strict Standards

Gaining approval from Apple was not a simple process.

Poke spent several months ensuring its platform complied with Apple’s guidelines and requirements. To secure approval, the company had to:

  • Clearly identify its service as an AI agent
  • Provide access to live human support when necessary
  • Submit verification from messaging service providers
  • Adapt its interface to Apple’s design standards

The platform also had to modify how content appears inside iMessage. For example, Poke now uses link previews instead of inline links and follows Apple’s visual guidelines for buttons and user interface elements.

These requirements demonstrate Apple’s continued focus on trust, transparency, and user experience.

Why Being First Matters

Being the first AI agent approved for Apple’s Messages for Business platform gives Poke a significant competitive advantage.

According to von Hagen, trust and alignment with Apple’s values played an important role in the approval process. The company focused on building a reliable and user-friendly AI product rather than pursuing rapid growth through questionable tactics.

As more AI startups look to enter Apple’s messaging ecosystem, they may face similar approval requirements and extended review timelines.

The Future of AI Agents on Apple Platforms

The approval of Poke could signal a broader shift in Apple’s AI strategy.

Industry observers expect Apple to expand support for AI-powered services across its ecosystem. Rumors surrounding WWDC suggest the company may introduce an AI-enhanced Siri, new developer tools, and additional AI integrations.

While Apple has not publicly commented on future plans for AI agents within Messages for Business, Poke’s successful approval suggests the company is becoming more open to AI-driven communication experiences.

As consumer demand for AI assistants continues to grow, messaging platforms may become one of the most natural ways for people to interact with intelligent digital agents.

Strong Investor Confidence

Poke’s growth has attracted significant investor interest. The startup is backed by leading investors including Spark Capital and General Catalyst.

Recently, the company secured an additional $10 million in funding, adding to its previous $15 million seed round. Following the investment, Poke achieved a reported post-money valuation of $300 million, reflecting strong confidence in the future of AI-powered messaging solutions.

Conclusion

Apple’s approval of Poke as the first AI agent on its Messages for Business platform represents a major milestone for both the startup and the broader AI industry. By bringing AI assistance directly into iMessage, Apple is helping create a more accessible and user-friendly way for people to interact with artificial intelligence.

As AI continues to reshape communication, productivity, and customer engagement, partnerships like this could define the next generation of digital experiences. With strong investor backing, growing user adoption, and Apple’s support, Poke is well-positioned to play a significant role in the future of conversational AI.
