Conor McGregor’s White House Visit Sparks Criticism from Irish Leaders
Conor McGregor’s recent visit to the White House for a St. Patrick’s Day meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn backlash from Irish political leaders. The MMA fighter’s remarks on immigration policies in Ireland have sparked controversy, with government officials stating that he does not represent the Irish people.
McGregor Meets Trump at the White House
McGregor, accompanied by his partner and four children, met President Trump in the Oval Office, where he praised the president’s work ethic as “inspiring.” Trump, in turn, described McGregor as “fantastic.” The meeting followed last week’s visit by Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Micheál Martin, during which Trump commented on McGregor’s tattoos.
Controversial Immigration Comments
During a White House press briefing, McGregor took the lectern alongside press secretary Karoline Leavitt. He criticized Ireland’s immigration policies, accusing the government of “abandoning” the voices of the Irish people.
“What is going on in Ireland is a travesty,” McGregor stated. “Our money is being spent on overseas issues that have nothing to do with the Irish people.”
His remarks were met with swift criticism from Irish leaders. Taoiseach Micheál Martin condemned McGregor’s comments, emphasizing that St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration of community and unity.
“Conor McGregor’s remarks are wrong and do not reflect the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day or the views of the people of Ireland,” Martin said in a social media post.
Irish Leaders Respond
Deputy Prime Minister (Tánaiste) Simon Harris clarified that McGregor was visiting the White House in a personal capacity and had no authority to speak on behalf of Ireland.
“He doesn’t speak for Ireland. Neither he nor the people of Ireland speak for them. According to Harris, he has no mandate to take action of this nature.
Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) member Matthew O’Toole also criticized McGregor’s appearance at the White House, calling it an “insult to the island of Ireland.”
McGregor’s History of Controversy
McGregor has a history of making inflammatory comments on immigration. He has previously supported protests against immigration policies in Ireland, and his social media posts have been widely circulated by far-right groups.
The MMA fighter has also been embroiled in legal troubles. In 2024, a Dublin court ordered McGregor to pay over €248,000 in damages to a woman who accused him of assault. In another civil lawsuit, a woman alleged that McGregor sexually assaulted her during the 2023 NBA Finals in Miami, though charges were not filed.
McGregor and Trump’s Continued Association
McGregor has been an outspoken supporter of Trump and previously attended his presidential inauguration. During their recent White House meeting, McGregor was also photographed with billionaire Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump.
As McGregor continues to stir political controversy. His latest White House visit has further fueled debates on his role in Irish society and politics.
