How AI Accounting Startup Rillet Raised $100M and Became a Unicorn in 48 Hours
The AI accounting industry is gaining momentum as businesses look for smarter ways to manage finance and accounting operations. One startup leading this shift is Rillet, an AI-native accounting platform that recently raised $100 million at a $1 billion valuation—turning the company into a unicorn in just 48 hours.
The rapid funding round highlights growing investor confidence in AI-powered financial software and the increasing demand for alternatives to traditional accounting and ERP systems.
Rillet Raises $100 Million at a $1 Billion Valuation
Rillet, which emerged from stealth about two years ago, has now raised approximately $200 million from leading investors, including Iconiq, Andreessen Horowitz, and Sequoia.
The company’s latest $100 million funding round came together remarkably fast. According to co-founder and CEO Nicolas Kopp, Rillet was not actively looking to raise money.
Following a board meeting where the company shared its recent growth, investor interest quickly increased. Within 48 hours, discussions, calls, and commitments resulted in a new funding round that valued Rillet at $1 billion.
Why Investors Are Betting on Rillet
Rillet has already built a strong customer base of around 600 companies. Many customers are replacing established accounting and ERP platforms with Rillet rather than simply testing the technology alongside their existing systems.
The company says approximately:
- 50% of customers come from Intuit.
- 30% come from NetSuite and Sage Intacct.
- 20% come from Oracle, SAP, Workday, and Microsoft products.
This customer movement demonstrates how AI-native accounting platforms are beginning to challenge traditional financial software.
Rillet’s annualized revenue rate also doubled in the quarter leading up to the funding round. The company has continued adding new customers, including public companies, while also developing an alliance with EY to introduce AI tools to the auditing industry.
AI-Native Accounting Is Changing Financial Operations
Unlike traditional accounting software designed primarily around human users, Rillet was built with AI agents at its core.
The platform allows AI agents to assist with corporate bookkeeping and financial workflows while accountants remain involved in decision-making and oversight.
This approach could significantly change how finance teams handle repetitive tasks.
Instead of spending hours on manual data entry, reconciliation, and other routine processes, accounting professionals can use AI to automate parts of their workload and focus more on analysis, financial planning, and business decisions.
Rillet Is Challenging Legacy Accounting Platforms
The rise of AI-native software comes at a time when established enterprise software companies are facing increasing pressure from AI startups.
Traditional platforms such as Oracle, NetSuite, Intuit, and other major accounting systems have dominated the market for years. However, AI-powered alternatives are creating new options for businesses that want faster and more automated financial workflows.
Rillet’s growth suggests that companies may be increasingly willing to replace legacy systems when newer AI platforms can deliver a better experience.
Security and Data Privacy Are Key Priorities
Accounting platforms handle highly sensitive financial information, making security and data privacy critical.
Rillet has developed features designed to give businesses greater control over how their data is processed by AI models.
The platform includes model routing, allowing customers to direct requests to foundational AI models such as OpenAI or Anthropic. Rillet also says its system prevents those models from training on customer data.
The company also uses separate customer data environments, meaning one customer’s information does not become available to another customer.
AI Agents Can Remember and Learn From Past Actions
Another important part of Rillet’s platform is agent memory.
The AI agents can store historical actions and use that information when handling future processes. This allows the system to become more useful for recurring accounting workflows.
As AI agents become capable of handling longer and more complex tasks, businesses also need better ways to understand what those agents are doing.
That is where Rillet’s governance tools become important.
Rillet Adds AI Governance for Accountants
Around three months before the latest funding announcement, Rillet introduced a governance feature that allows accountants to review and audit decisions made by AI agents.
Accountants can see information such as which numbers an AI agent used and how it reached a particular calculation.
Building this capability was challenging because large amounts of agent activity had to be converted into information that humans could easily understand.
For businesses using AI in financial operations, this type of transparency can become essential.
Will AI Replace Accountants?
The growth of AI accounting startups has also raised questions about the future of accounting jobs.
Kopp does not believe mass job displacement is coming anytime soon. Instead, he sees AI as a tool that can help accountants automate repetitive work and spend more time providing financial advice and analysis.
The United States is already facing challenges in finding accounting and finance professionals. The decline in accounting graduates, combined with demanding workloads, has created concerns about the future talent pipeline.
At the same time, demand for accounting-related roles is expected to continue growing.
AI could therefore play a different role than simply replacing workers. It may help businesses deal with talent shortages by allowing accountants to manage more work with better technology.
Regulation Will Become More Important
As AI agents take on more financial responsibilities, regulation will also become an important part of the industry.
For public companies, transactions handled by AI agents currently require human approval. As AI becomes more capable, regulators will need to determine how existing financial controls should evolve.
Rillet believes regulations will gradually adapt as businesses and professionals become more comfortable with AI-powered accounting.
This could be similar to the transition to cloud software, where businesses initially had concerns before gradually adopting cloud-based systems across their operations.
Rillet’s Bigger Vision Goes Beyond Accounting
While accounting is Rillet’s initial focus, the company’s ambitions extend beyond bookkeeping.
Investors believe the platform could eventually help reinvent the broader finance function.
AI agents could potentially support areas such as financial reporting, reconciliation, auditing, analysis, forecasting, and other finance operations.
This broader opportunity is one reason investors see AI-powered finance software as a major opportunity in the AI era.
What Rillet’s $100M Funding Means for AI Startups
Rillet’s rapid $100 million funding round sends a strong message about the current AI startup market.
Investors are not only looking for companies with impressive AI technology. They are increasingly interested in startups that can demonstrate real customers, strong revenue growth, and the ability to replace established software.
Rillet’s success also shows that AI-native products can compete directly with legacy enterprise software when they solve real business problems.
The company’s journey from stealth to a $1 billion valuation in just two years highlights the growing demand for AI-powered business solutions.
The Future of AI Accounting
Rillet’s story represents a larger shift taking place across the software industry.
AI is moving beyond simple productivity tools and entering core business functions such as accounting and finance. Companies are beginning to use AI agents to automate complex workflows while keeping humans involved in oversight and decision-making.
The biggest opportunity may not be replacing accountants. It could be giving them better tools to work faster, reduce repetitive tasks, and focus on higher-value financial decisions.
With $100 million in new funding and a $1 billion valuation, Rillet is now positioned to play a major role in this transformation.
