Spy Scandal Deepens: Rippling’s Star Witness Claims Harassment and Fear for Family’s Safety
Keith O’Brien’s Shocking Affidavit Raises Alarms in HR Tech Rivalry
Keith O’Brien, the former spy in a fierce HR tech battle between Rippling and Deel, has taken center stage again. Recently, an Irish court granted him a restraining order after he claimed multiple men were stalking him and his family.
The dramatic turn in this ongoing legal saga throws a spotlight on the escalating tensions between the two tech giants.
Confessions of a Corporate Spy: Inside the O’Brien Affair
O’Brien admitted earlier this year that he was hired by Deel to spy on Rippling. His role? To steal sensitive internal data — from products to customer information.
He was paid €5,000 monthly for his espionage. Eventually, Rippling uncovered the betrayal through a decoy Slack channel. What followed was a bizarre attempt by O’Brien to destroy his phone, allegedly flushing and smashing it before dumping its pieces at his mother-in-law’s home.
The Alleged Surveillance: Skoda, Black SUV, and a Big Dog
According to his affidavit, the spying hasn’t stopped. But now, O’Brien is the one being watched. He testified that two men in a gray Skoda Superb followed him once, and more frequently, a short-haired man in a black SUV with a large dog has been tailing him.
These encounters, he claims, happen near his home and while driving. He tried to shake off the SUV by making sudden detours — only to see it return again and again.
Fear at Home: Emotional Toll on O’Brien and His Family
The psychological pressure has mounted. O’Brien stated in court that he and his wife have suffered from severe anxiety. Their sleep is disrupted. Their children’s safety now feels threatened.
They’ve hired a security consultancy. O’Brien even suspects tracking devices may have been placed on his car.
Rippling vs. Deel: The Battle Gets Personal
Rippling and Deel have been fierce competitors in the HR tech space. Deel was once a client of Rippling before launching rival products.
Now, the rivalry is playing out in court, with lawsuits and countersuits. Rippling is suing Deel over alleged corporate spying. Deel has responded with its own accusations, claiming Rippling impersonated customers to gain access.
Keith O’Brien is a key witness in Rippling’s case. In a surprising move, Rippling has taken on the costs for his legal and personal security expenses.
Is It Harassment or Coincidence? The Court Weighs In
While O’Brien and his legal team suggest that the surveillance could be tied to his role as a witness, they admit they have no concrete evidence linking the unidentified men to Deel.
Deel strongly denies any involvement with the black SUV or the alleged stalkers. The presiding judge, while issuing the restraining order, remarked that the situation sounded “like a 1970s cops and robbers TV show,” according to Business Post.
A Spy Turned Victim in the HR Startup Tug of War
O’Brien now finds himself entangled in a legal drama that shows no sign of slowing down. What started as corporate espionage has spiraled into a personal nightmare.
His testimony and life are at the center of a billion-dollar rivalry between two of Silicon Valley’s most ambitious startups. As the lawsuits unfold, one thing is certain, O’Brien’s tale is no longer just about stolen data. It’s about safety, trust, and the high cost of crossing corporate lines.
Stay tuned as the courtroom battle continues to unravel the truth behind one of the tech industry’s most gripping feuds.
