Waymo’s Robotaxi Rides Soar to 450,000 Per Week — What This Growth Signals for the Future of Autonomous Mobility
Waymo’s robotaxi revolution is speeding up faster than anyone expected.
Just six months ago, the Alphabet-owned self-driving company revealed it was completing 250,000 robotaxi rides per week across cities like Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Since then, Waymo has been quiet about its numbers — only hinting at “hundreds of thousands” of weekly rides.
But now, a leaked investor letter has filled in the blanks.
According to a report from CNBC, a letter from Tiger Global Management to its investors disclosed that Waymo is now delivering 450,000 rides every week. That’s nearly double what it reported earlier this year, highlighting enormous momentum for the company and the broader autonomous mobility industry.
What’s Driving This Surge?
Tiger Global highlighted Waymo as one of the biggest contributors to its fund’s performance, alongside companies like OpenAI and Databricks. The skyrocketing ride count shows two key things:
-
Demand for robotaxis is growing rapidly
-
Waymo is successfully scaling operations across major U.S. cities
And this growth is far from slowing down.
Expansion Plans for 2026
Waymo is currently operating commercial robotaxi services in five cities. But by 2026, it plans to enter 12 additional cities, including:
-
Dallas
-
Denver
-
Houston
-
Nashville
-
San Diego
This aggressive rollout signals a shift: autonomous ride-hailing is moving from early-stage testing to mainstream availability.
What This Means for the Industry
Waymo’s rapid expansion and ride growth show that autonomous vehicles are reaching a tipping point. More rides mean better data, safer systems, and faster improvements, all crucial for widespread adoption.
As more cities open to driverless mobility, the competition among AV companies will intensify, and consumers will have more choices for safe, efficient, and affordable transportation.
Waymo hasn’t commented on the leaked numbers, but the growth speaks for itself.
The robotaxi future is no longer coming.
It’s already here and accelerating.
