Meta’s Recruiting Blitz Snags Top OpenAI Talent in AI Hiring War
Meta is ramping up its battle for AI dominance this time by poaching three high-profile researchers from OpenAI.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, who previously established OpenAI’s Zurich office, have now joined Meta’s superintelligence team. The move marks a clear win for Mark Zuckerberg in his ongoing recruitment campaign targeting elite AI experts.
Zuckerberg’s recruiting strategy has made waves across Silicon Valley. From $100M+ compensation packages to personal WhatsApp messages and dinners at his homes, the Meta CEO is pulling out all the stops. A leaked detail from his so-called “Recruiting Party ” group chat shows how coordinated and aggressive the campaign has become.
This isn’t Meta’s first major acquisition. Earlier this year, Zuckerberg lured Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang with a massive $14 billion investment, making him one of tech’s most expensive hires.
However, not all targets are biting. OpenAI co-founders Ilya Sutskever and John Schulman have resisted Meta’s advances, instead launching their own AI startups. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, speaking on a podcast with his brother Jack, said:
“I’m really happy that, at least so far, none of our best people have decided to take him up on [those offers].”
Still, Meta’s recent hire of three top researchers proves the competition is heating up, and Zuckerberg’s strategy is starting to pay off.
