Protester Disrupts Microsoft Copilot Keynote Over AI Weapon Sales
On Friday, a protester interrupted Microsoft Copilot’s keynote over its alleged involvement in selling AI technology to Israel. The protest happened during a presentation by Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s Head of Consumer AI.
The protester stood up and shouted, “Shame on you! You claim you care about using AI for good, but Microsoft sells AI weapons to the Israeli military … All of Microsoft has blood on its hands.” The event was paused for a moment. Suleyman replied calmly, “I hear you, thank you,” and continued with the keynote.
According to the Associated Press, Microsoft’s AI models, developed with OpenAI, were used in an Israeli military program in February. The program allegedly helped select targets during recent conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. One reported misfire, according to the AP, killed several young girls and their grandmother, and has put Microsoft under the spotlight.
Microsoft hasn’t addressed these allegations in detail but is facing growing criticism from activists and even its own employees. Employee-led protests have emerged internally calling on Microsoft to re-evaluate its defense-related partnerships and be more transparent about its AI use.
This incident highlights the growing gap between the rapid development of AI and the ethical questions around its use in military operations. Microsoft is balancing innovation and responsibility as AI becomes increasingly integrated into national defense strategies.
The protest at the Copilot keynote shows we need more public conversation and accountability around AI, especially in high-stakes areas like defense and international conflict.
Stay tuned for more on this story and Microsoft’s response.
