Why Startups Need to Rethink Sales and Traction: Lessons from VC Tim Chen

Why Startups Should Rethink Sales and Growth- Tim Chen Insights

In today’s fast-paced startup ecosystem, the traditional playbook for growth is starting to show its cracks. Venture capitalist Tim Chen, founder of Essence VC, believes startups need to radically rethink how they pursue sales and traction.

Chen’s journey is anything but typical. After selling his small startup and facing rejection from every VC firm he approached, he pivoted toward angel investing. Over time, that path led him to build Essence VC, where he recently closed his fourth fund — an impressive $41 million — “without even trying.”

So, what’s his secret? Chen combines deep technical insight with business acumen. He can challenge PhD founders on their implementation details while also spotting the market forces that transform early-stage startups into category leaders.

Chen explains that the “revenue at all costs” mindset popularized by accelerators doesn’t always fit infrastructure-focused companies. These startups, he argues, should emphasize technical excellence, product-market fit, and scalability before chasing aggressive sales numbers.

He also shared how he helped one of his portfolio companies pivot strategically — a move that completely reshaped their growth trajectory. Chen’s advice to founders is clear: don’t chase short-term validation. Instead, build lasting value by focusing on long-term market positioning and deep customer understanding.

As a “small exit founder” himself, Chen believes the venture world often gets it backward. True success, he says, isn’t about fast fundraising or inflated valuations — it’s about building real, sustainable companies that solve meaningful problems.

For founders and investors alike, Tim Chen’s perspective is a refreshing reminder: the best startups don’t just sell — they solve, adapt, and endure.
