Waymo Set to Launch Robotaxi Service in London by 2026: A Major Leap for Autonomous Mobility
Alphabet-owned Waymo is taking another major step in the global expansion of its autonomous vehicle program. The company announced plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in London in 2026, marking its second international market after Tokyo.
This move solidifies Waymo’s vision of bringing safe, sustainable, and driverless transportation to major cities worldwide.
A Strategic Move into the U.K.
Waymo’s connection to the U.K. isn’t new. Back in 2019, the company acquired Latent Logic, an Oxford University spinout that specialized in imitation learning a form of AI used to make driving simulations more realistic. This acquisition also led to the creation of Waymo’s engineering hub in Oxford, which now plays a crucial role in the company’s European expansion.
Testing Begins with Human Drivers
The company revealed that its all-electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles, equipped with advanced Waymo Driver technology, will soon hit the streets of London for testing. Initially, human safety drivers will be behind the wheel, followed by driverless testing and, eventually, public robotaxi rides.
This gradual rollout follows the same strategy Waymo used in Phoenix and San Francisco, ensuring both safety and reliability before fully autonomous operations begin.
Partnerships Powering the Rollout
Waymo plans to partner with Moove, a company already managing its autonomous fleet in Phoenix, to handle fleet operations in London. Moove will oversee vehicle charging, cleaning, and maintenance, while Waymo will focus on autonomous technology, monitoring, and roadside assistance.
The model mirrors Waymo’s collaborations in Austin and Atlanta, where Uber helps manage fleet logistics through its app, providing seamless access to robotaxis for riders.
Awaiting U.K. Government Approval
The official launch timeline will depend on regulatory approvals from the U.K. government. However, Waymo’s track record of working closely with local authorities in the U.S. suggests a smooth transition into the London market.
Expanding the Robotaxi Ecosystem
With active testing and operations already in cities like Phoenix, Los Angeles, Austin, and San Francisco, and plans for Miami, Nashville, and Washington D.C., London marks another crucial milestone in Waymo’s global journey.
By combining cutting-edge AI, sustainable EVs, and strategic partnerships, Waymo is shaping the future of urban transportation one city at a time.
