TikTok Returns to U.S. App Stores Amid National Security Debate
TikTok Is Live on Apple and Google
After being absent from US app stores for nearly a month, TikTok is back on Apple and Google’s app stores. Along with other ByteDance apps like CapCut and Lemon8, it was removed following a national security law that banned its operations in the US.
Why Was TikTok Removed?
ByteDance’s Chinese ownership led to a US law that required the company to sell TikTok’s US operations by January 19, 2025 or face a US wide ban. App stores had to comply with the law to avoid penalties. Despite ByteDance’s legal appeals, the US Supreme Court upheld the decision on January 17.
Trump’s Executive Order Delayed Ban
On taking office on January 20, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order delaying the ban by 75 days. This gave ByteDance more time to find a buyer. It went back online and providers like Oracle enabled their services. But Apple and Google didn’t relist the app due to potential penalties.
Who Will Buy TikTok US?
Trump has proposed an alternative solution where the US government and tech companies will own 50% of TikTok. He also proposed a sovereign wealth fund to facilitate the acquisition. Tech giants Oracle and Microsoft are top contenders to buy.
Competitors Capitalize
The uncertainty surrounding TikTok has prompted competitors to roll out similar features. X and Bluesky launched vertical video feeds while Meta released a new video editing app to compete with CapCut.
TikTok’s Popularity Remains Strong
Despite legal issues, TikTok is still a social media giant. According to Sensor Tower, it was the 2nd most downloaded app in the US last year with 52 million downloads.
Now that TikTok is back in app stores, US users can install the app again. But its future is still uncertain as ByteDance navigates regulatory hurdles and potential acquisition deals.
