How Senra Is Transforming an Overlooked Industry with Smart Manufacturing

The future of aerospace, defense, and electric vehicles depends on reliable electrical systems. Yet one critical component has remained largely unchanged for decades: wire harness manufacturing.

Former SpaceX engineer Jordan Black aims to change that. His startup, Senra, has raised $65 million in Series B funding to modernize the way wire harnesses are designed, managed, and manufactured.

By combining software, automation, and skilled technicians, Senra is bringing digital innovation to an industry that has relied on manual processes since the Cold War era.

What Is Senra?

Founded in 2023 by Jordan Black and Benjamin Shanahan, Senra is a U.S.-based manufacturing technology startup focused on improving the production of wire harnesses.

Before launching Senra, Black worked at SpaceX, where he helped scale wire harness production for the company’s Starship rocket program. During that experience, he discovered that most manufacturers still relied on outdated techniques.

According to Black, many wire harness factories continue using wooden assembly tables and manual workflows that have changed very little over the past several decades.

That realization inspired the creation of Senra.

What Are Wire Harnesses and Why Are They Important?

Wire harnesses are organized bundles of electrical wires that distribute power and signals throughout a machine.

They are essential components in:

  • Rockets
  • Satellites
  • Aircraft
  • Electric vehicles
  • Defense systems
  • Industrial machinery
  • Maritime vehicles

As vehicles become more intelligent and connected, wiring systems become increasingly complex. Even a small mistake during production can lead to expensive failures or safety risks.

The Problem with Traditional Wire Harness Manufacturing

Unlike many modern manufacturing processes, wire harness production still depends heavily on skilled technicians assembling each harness by hand.

This creates several challenges:

  • Manual production slows manufacturing.
  • Tracking engineering changes is difficult.
  • Documentation is often disconnected.
  • Human errors become harder to detect.
  • Scaling production is expensive.

Jordan Black believes the industry needs better software before complete automation becomes possible.

How Senra Is Modernizing Manufacturing

Rather than replacing skilled workers with robots, Senra focuses on improving the entire production process using technology.

Its proprietary software platform, Amp, helps manufacturers:

  • Standardize engineering data
  • Track materials throughout production
  • Record every design change
  • Create digital twins of wire harnesses
  • Guide technicians through assembly

This digital approach reduces errors while improving consistency across every stage of manufacturing.

Learning from the Boeing Starliner Incident

The importance of accurate wire harness manufacturing became clear during Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft program.

In 2023, Boeing discovered that sections of Starliner’s wiring were secured using flammable tape. The issue forced engineers to redesign and rebuild the spacecraft’s wiring system, resulting in significant delays and additional costs.

Incidents like this highlight why better quality control and digital tracking are becoming increasingly important across aerospace manufacturing.

Automation Comes After Standardization

Jordan Black follows a manufacturing philosophy inspired by Elon Musk.

Instead of automating inefficient processes, Senra first builds standardized systems that make automation practical later.

This strategy allows the company to:

  • Improve manufacturing quality
  • Reduce production errors
  • Train technicians more efficiently
  • Scale production faster
  • Introduce automation where it provides real value

The company also operates what Black describes as the only federally certified wire harness training program, helping develop skilled workers for advanced manufacturing.

Strong Investor Confidence

Senra’s growth has attracted support from several leading venture capital firms.

The $65 million Series B funding was co-led by:

  • Lowercarbon
  • Interlagos

Additional investors include:

  • General Catalyst
  • Sequoia Capital
  • Andreessen Horowitz
  • Founders Fund

The investment reflects growing interest in startups that strengthen U.S. manufacturing and defense technology.

Supporting Aerospace, Defense, and Advanced Manufacturing

Although Senra has not publicly disclosed its customers, the company says it serves manufacturers building:

  • Launch vehicles
  • Satellites
  • Defense systems
  • Maritime platforms
  • Submarines
  • Military ground vehicles

Demand continues to rise as governments and private companies invest heavily in aerospace, national security, and next-generation transportation.

Scaling Production for the Future

Senra currently manufactures approximately 1,000 wire harnesses every month across two production facilities.

The startup plans to increase capacity dramatically, targeting 10,000 units per month by 2027.

Its long-term vision combines digital manufacturing, software-driven quality control, and carefully implemented automation to support high-volume production without sacrificing reliability.

Why Senra Matters for the Manufacturing Industry

Wire harnesses may not receive the same attention as rockets or electric vehicles, but they play a vital role in every advanced machine.

By modernizing one of manufacturing’s most traditional processes, Senra is helping create more reliable aerospace systems, stronger defense technologies, and smarter industrial production.

As industries continue adopting automation and digital manufacturing, startups like Senra demonstrate that innovation often begins by improving the overlooked parts of the supply chain.

Final Thoughts

Senra’s $65 million funding round highlights growing investor confidence in advanced manufacturing startups. Instead of replacing skilled workers, the company is enhancing their capabilities through software, digital workflows, and intelligent automation.

With increasing demand across aerospace, defense, and mobility industries, Senra is well-positioned to redefine wire harness manufacturing for the next generation of high-tech vehicles.
