Same-Day Satellite Delivery: How Impulse Space is Redefining Access to GEO Orbits
Amazon set the standard for same-day delivery on Earth, now Impulse Space is bringing that concept to orbit. The in space propulsion startup, founded in 2021 by former SpaceX veteran Tom Mueller, is promising to transport satellites from low Earth orbit (LEO) to geostationary orbit (GEO) in just hours, instead of the months-long timelines typical today.
Recently, Impulse announced a trio of major deals that highlight its vision for ultra-fast orbital logistics:
-
A 2026 demo mission with Anduril, building a spacecraft for rendezvous and proximity operations, critical for defense and space domain awareness.
-
A 2027 contract with Astranis, where Helios will deliver MicroGEO satellites to GEO in under 24 hours, accelerating broadband service deployment.
-
A multi-launch partnership with Infinite Orbits, enabling ride-share delivery of servicing satellites to GEO through Impulse’s Caravan program.
At the center of these missions is Helios, Impulse’s methane-oxygen kick stage. Equipped with the powerful Deneb engine, Helios acts as a “last-mile courier,” pushing satellites quickly from LEO to GEO. Its capabilities could transform both commercial satellite operations and U.S. defense strategies by enabling faster maneuvering in contested orbits.
The stakes in GEO are high. Satellites at 22,000 miles above Earth must survive the harsh Van Allen radiation belts, maintain precise positions, and overcome long-distance communication delays. By reducing transport time from months to hours, Impulse is not only speeding up deployment but also redefining satellite servicing, defense operations, and global communications.
With its ride-share model and ultra-fast propulsion, Impulse is positioning itself as the delivery backbone for the next wave of GEO growth. If successful, the company could make same-day satellite delivery a new benchmark in the space economy.
