Police Shut Down Cluely’s Viral After-Party: The Most Legendary Party That Never Happened
San Francisco’s latest tech drama unfolded Monday night, when police shut down a Cluely’s viral after-party planned, a controversial AI startup known for its bold marketing and “cheat at everything” approach.
The party was meant to follow Y Combinator’s AI Startup School, which featured top speakers like Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Satya Nadella. Though Cluely isn’t a YC-backed startup, founder Roy Lee created buzz by posting a satirical video near YC’s iconic sign, inviting his 100,000+ X followers to DM for access.
Despite saying the invites only went to “friends and friends of friends,” word spread quickly. On the night of the event, over 2,000 people lined up outside the venue, blocking traffic. Police intervened and shut it down before it could begin.
“It would have been the most legendary party in tech history,” Lee said. “Now, it’s the most legendary party that never happened.”
Cluely’s viral rise began when its founders built an AI tool designed to help users cheat during software engineering interviews. That controversial tool eventually evolved into a $5.3 million-funded startup, offering discreet in-browser assistance for jobseekers.
The shut-down party has already sparked memes, jokes, and online buzz—exactly the kind of viral attention Cluely thrives on.
Stay tuned. Lee hints the drinks are still waiting… for the next big one.
