Google replaces ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ with ‘AI Mode’ on search homepage test
Google is testing a major redesign of its search homepage. In a limited test in its Labs environment, the company is replacing the classic “I’m Feeling Lucky” button with a new feature called “AI Mode.” This is a sign of Google’s push to put AI-powered search tools front and center.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the test to The Verge, which first saw the change. For now, the new design is only visible to a small group of users. No word on if it will roll out more widely.
Timing is interesting, just days before Google I/O 2025 where the company is expected to announce big updates to AI search.
It doesn’t change its homepage often so this is a big deal. Maybe they’re feeling pressure from AI search competitors like ChatGPT. An Apple executive recently said Google searches via Safari declined last month for the first time, possibly because of AI tool interest.
