Google Acquires HTC’s XR Business Division for $250 Million
Google Strengthens XR Push with HTC Deal
Google has bought part of HTC’s extended reality (XR) business for $250m. The deal shows its commitment to virtual and augmented reality hardware as the company has just launched its Android XR platform.
Under the agreement, it gets HTC VIVE engineering staff and non-exclusive IP rights. But HTC gets to continue using and developing the tech themselves.
This isn’t the first time these two have worked together. In 2017 Google bought HTC’s smartphone division for $1.1bn and the deal extended into the XR space.
Accelerating Android XR Development
Google says this will speed up Android XR, enabling headsets and smart glasses. Apple and Meta are already leading in virtual and augmented reality, XR is a hot space.
The deal shows it is trying to get a stronger foothold in the XR landscape. By bringing in HTC’s expertise it will challenge its rivals and offer solutions for consumers and businesses.
Future Collaboration Opportunities
Both companies mentioned they will be exploring more collaboration in the future. This could mean more XR innovation with HTC’s VIVE tech and Google’s Android XR.
With XR getting more dominant, this is a big move for Google in shaping immersive tech.
