Elon Musk’s Tesla Bet: From Record EV Sales to Building a “Robot Army”
Tesla is once again in the spotlight as CEO Elon Musk doubles down on his ambitious shift from electric vehicles to artificial intelligence and robotics. After a rough start to 2025, Tesla recorded its best quarter yet, delivering 497,099 vehicles and earning $21.2 billion in automotive revenue. However, profits told a different story, dropping 37% compared to last year, revealing deeper challenges beneath the surface.
While Tesla’s car business remains its main driver, Musk’s focus is shifting toward AI-powered projects like Full Self-Driving (FSD), Robotaxi, and the humanoid robot Optimus. These ventures, though costly, represent Musk’s vision of transforming Tesla into an AI and robotics powerhouse. The company’s operating expenses jumped 50% year-over-year, fueled by R&D investments and restructuring costs tied to the shutdown of the Dojo supercomputer project.
Despite these financial pressures, including a $400 million tariff hit Musk remains undeterred. He sees Tesla at a “critical inflection point,” aiming to scale FSD and bring Optimus to market, calling the robot “an incredible surgeon” capable of reshaping industries. Production of Optimus Version 3 may begin in early 2026, signaling Tesla’s deep commitment to automation and AI innovation.
Adding fuel to the drama is Tesla’s controversial $1 trillion compensation package for Musk, now up for a shareholder vote. While advisory firms oppose it, many investors are expected to back Musk, given his past record of pushing Tesla into new frontiers.
As Tesla balances its EV success with AI ambitions, 2026 will be a defining year. Musk’s “robot army” may still be a work in progress, but one thing is clear, the future of Tesla is no longer just electric; it’s intelligent.
