Apple Music Classical Adopts Black-and-White Icon to Match Apple Music Redesign

Apple has given Apple Music Classical a fresh coat of paint, updating both its app icon and its interface so they line up with the recent redesign of the main Apple Music app.

The change follows Apple's decision to retire the long-familiar Apple Music icon, a white music note on a red background, in favor of a black-and-white design. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the classical app now follows the same monochrome direction.

A Monochrome Take on the Familiar G-Clef

The updated Apple Music Classical icon keeps the G-clef that has identified the app since its launch. What has changed is the color scheme: the symbol now appears in black on a white background.

The result places the classical app visually alongside the refreshed Apple Music icon, making the two services look like members of the same family on a user's home screen.

Depth Retained Where Apple Music Went Flat

There is one notable difference between the two icons. The main Apple Music icon has taken on a flat appearance, while the Apple Music Classical icon keeps a three-dimensional feel.

Subtle lighting, shading and transparency effects give the classical icon a sense of depth, a small design choice that sets it slightly apart from its sibling despite the shared color palette.

Blue Replaces Red Inside the App

The visual update extends beyond the icon. Within the app, buttons that previously used red accents now appear in blue.

That shade of blue sits closer to the default accent color Apple uses across many of its other apps, suggesting a broader effort to make the music apps feel more consistent with the rest of the company's software.

What It Suggests About Apple's Branding Plans

The update arrives only weeks after Apple introduced a far more colorful branding campaign for Apple Music. Those visuals were produced by using sound waves to move water, alongside the debut of the new monochrome icon.

Many observers expected Apple might eventually turn that vivid campaign imagery into the app's icon. Bringing Apple Music Classical in line with the black-and-white design, however, indicates the company appears committed to the monochrome look for its apps, at least for now.

Subscription Requirements Remain Unchanged

Apple Music Classical is not a standalone service. Using it still requires an active Apple Music subscription, which costs $11.99 per month and comes with a one-month free trial.

Subscribers can also access it through the Apple One bundle, which combines several Apple services under a single plan.

Why the Consistency Matters

For everyday users, the update is mostly cosmetic. Still, it shows how carefully Apple manages its visual identity across related products, aligning icons and accent colors so the services read as a cohesive whole.

For designers and product teams, it is a reminder that a brand refresh rarely stops at a single icon. Once the flagship app changes, companion products typically follow, and the details, such as whether to keep depth or go flat, become part of how a company signals its direction.
