AI Chip Startup FuriosaAI Rejects $800M Meta Acquisition Bid

FuriosaAI Declines Meta’s Acquisition Offer
South Korean AI chip startup FuriosaAI has reportedly turned down an $800 million acquisition offer from Meta. Instead of selling, the company is doubling down on the development and production of its advanced AI chips.
Why Did FuriosaAI Reject Meta’s Offer?
According to reports, the deal collapsed due to disagreements over post-acquisition strategy and organizational structure, rather than valuation concerns. FuriosaAI is determined to carve out its own path in the AI hardware space.
Meta’s AI Chip Ambitions
Meta has been striving to reduce its dependence on Nvidia for AI chips. The company has already unveiled its custom AI chips and announced a $65 billion investment this year to accelerate its AI advancements. The tech giant continues to explore alternatives as it builds large language models (LLMs) and other AI applications.
FuriosaAI Seeks New Investments
Despite rejecting Meta’s offer, FuriosaAI is actively seeking funding. The startup is reportedly in discussions to raise approximately $48 million (KRW 70 billion).
In this month’s fundraising round, the company will strengthen its financial position.
FuriosaAI’s AI Chip Innovations
Founded in 2017 by June Paik, a former Samsung Electronics and AMD engineer, FuriosaAI has made remarkable strides in AI chip development. The company has launched two AI chips:
- Warboy – Designed for high-performance AI workloads
- Renegade (RNGD) – Optimized for reasoning models
FuriosaAI has successfully tested the RNGD chips in collaboration with LG AI Research and Aramco. Later this year, LG AI Research plans to launch a commercial version of these chips.
Future Outlook for FuriosaAI
By choosing independence over acquisition, FuriosaAI is positioning itself as a strong competitor to Nvidia and AMD in the AI hardware market. With new funding, strategic partnerships, and cutting-edge chip development, the startup is poised for significant growth in the AI industry.
Stay tuned for more updates on FuriosaAI’s journey in AI chip innovation!
