Waymo has officially removed human safety drivers from its autonomous test vehicles in Nashville, marking a major milestone as the Alphabet-owned company prepares to launch a commercial robotaxi service in the city.

The move signals that Waymo is entering the final testing phase before opening its self-driving ride-hailing service to the public later this year.

Waymo and Lyft Partner for Nashville Robotaxi Service

Waymo has been testing its autonomous vehicles in Nashville for several months and plans to roll out its robotaxi service in partnership with Lyft. Initially, riders will book trips directly through the Waymo app. As the service expands, Waymo’s driverless vehicles will also become available via the Lyft app.

Lyft will manage fleet operations through its wholly owned subsidiary Flexdrive, which will oversee vehicle maintenance, charging infrastructure, depot operations, and overall fleet readiness.

Waymo Expands Its Driverless Footprint Across the U.S.

Nashville joins a growing list of cities where Waymo is scaling its autonomous driving operations. The company currently runs commercial robotaxi services in:

  • Atlanta

  • Austin

  • Los Angeles

  • Miami

  • San Francisco Bay Area

  • Phoenix

In addition, Waymo operates driverless test fleets in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando, further accelerating its nationwide expansion.

Waymo’s Proven Rollout Strategy

Waymo follows a consistent deployment strategy in every new market. The process typically begins with manually driven vehicles mapping city streets. Autonomous vehicles are then tested with a human safety operator behind the wheel.

Once performance and safety benchmarks are met, Waymo transitions to fully driverless testing, often allowing employees to hail rides before opening the service to the public.

What This Means for Nashville

By removing safety drivers from its test vehicles, Waymo is signaling strong confidence in its autonomous technology. The milestone brings Nashville closer to becoming one of the next major U.S. cities to offer fully driverless robotaxi rides.

As Waymo continues its rapid expansion, Nashville could soon play a key role in the future of autonomous urban transportation.
