Hinge CEO Steps Down to Launch Overtone — The Next Big AI Dating Revolution?
The dating app world just got a major shake-up.
Justin McLeod, the founder and CEO of Hinge, has stepped down to launch Overtone, a new AI-powered dating app designed to make online connections more meaningful.
Backed by Match Group — the parent company of Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid — Overtone already has strong industry support. Match has provided pre-seed funding and plans to take a substantial ownership stake. The project was incubated inside Hinge over the past year, where McLeod and a dedicated team explored how AI and voice-driven tools could transform how people meet.
Why Launch Overtone Now?
Online dating is facing a wave of fatigue, especially among Gen Z. Swipe culture, generic messages, and algorithmic sameness have made many users lose interest. To combat this, dating apps are experimenting with AI — from Tinder’s recommendation tools to Hinge’s new “Convo Starters.”
But Overtone aims to go deeper. Instead of surface-level AI gimmicks, it wants to use technology to help people connect in more personal, thoughtful ways.
A Trend Among Dating Founders
McLeod isn’t alone.
Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder of Bumble, is also building AI-driven tools — even suggesting the idea of letting AI versions of you date other people’s AIs. While controversial, it highlights a broader trend: founders want dating apps to evolve beyond swipes and texts.
Will AI Make Dating Better?
It’s still unclear how Overtone will differentiate itself, but early signs suggest:
-
More authentic conversations
-
Better match recommendations
-
Less awkward small talk
-
Tools designed for how modern daters actually communicate
Meanwhile, Hinge — now led by new CEO Jackie Jantos — will continue investing in AI features. Hinge’s AI recommendation feature already boosted matches and conversations by 15%, showing real demand for smarter tools.
What Gen Z Really Wants
According to Jantos, Gen Z expects:
-
Transparency
-
Authenticity
-
Experiences that feel human, not forced by algorithms
Striking this balance will be the biggest challenge for both Hinge and Overtone as AI becomes a core part of the dating experience.
Final Thoughts
Justin McLeod’s move signals a new era for dating apps — one where AI plays a major role not just in matching people, but in shaping how they communicate. With strong backing, a clear vision, and growing user frustration with current platforms, Overtone might just be the reset the dating industry needs.
If it succeeds, online dating could feel more natural, more personal, and maybe even… less awkward.
