Finding product-market fit isn’t about hype — it’s about building something customers genuinely care about. That’s the key message from the debut episode of Build Mode, a new podcast that dives into the real, unfiltered journey of building a startup. In this episode, host Isabelle Johannessen speaks with Deon Nicholas, co-founder of Forethought AI, to explore how the company found product-market fit by staying laser-focused on solving customer problems from day one.

Building with Customers, Not for Hype

From the beginning, Forethought avoided chasing flashy features, trends, or inflated valuations. Instead, Nicholas and his team concentrated on creating real value for real users. He believes that true conviction should come from customers — not investors — because customers are the ones who determine whether a product actually works.

This approach kept the team lean, focused, and deeply attentive to customer pain points. Nicholas notes that users often won’t directly tell you what’s wrong, so founders need to learn how to observe, interpret, and uncover real needs.

The 7-Failure Rule: Iteration Over Perfection

Nicholas is known for his “7-Failure Rule,” which encourages founders to embrace experimentation. The idea is simple: you’ll likely fail several times before discovering what truly clicks. Instead of aiming for perfection, Forethought embraced rapid iteration, learning fast and improving even faster.

This mindset helped the team refine their product without losing sight of the problems they set out to solve.

The Breakout Moment: The 2018 Turning Point

Forethought’s customer-focused strategy paid off during a major startup competition in 2018. Leading up to the event, Nicholas described the experience as a “friendly pressure cooker,” where the goal was to secure as many paying customer logos as possible before going on stage.

Their intense focus worked. The traction they built created strong investor interest and resulted in a $9 million Series A, establishing Forethought as an early force in the AI startup ecosystem.

Still, Nicholas believes the company’s long-term success came from focus, not frenzy. Hype fades, but customer value endures.
