Space Force Backs Commercial Innovation in $4B SATCOM Program to Secure Battlefield Communications
In a bold move to modernize military communications, the U.S. Space Force is betting big on commercial space innovation. Through its Protected Tactical Satcom (PTS-G) program, the Space Force aims to deliver jam-resistant, secure satellite communication capabilities for American warfighters operating in hostile environments.
The program recently entered a new phase, awarding $37.3 million in initial contracts to five companies—Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Viasat, Intelsat, and newcomer Astranis, a San Francisco-based startup known for its agile approach to satellite design. Intelsat will also collaborate with K2 Space, another venture-backed startup, to supply its satellite bus.
Unlike traditional military satellite procurements, which are often slow and expensive, PTS-G emphasizes commercial speed and competition. The total contract value could reach up to $4 billion, with the first satellite expected to launch by 2028.
By incorporating commercial baseline designs and fostering innovation among both defense giants and startups, the Space Force is transforming how the military acquires geostationary satellite communications (SATCOM).
As threats in space and cyber domains continue to evolve, initiatives like PTS-G are critical for ensuring that tactical forces remain connected and secure across the globe.
