Meta Hires Apple’s AI Chief Amid Aggressive AI Talent War
In a major development shaking up Silicon Valley’s AI landscape, Apple’s head of AI models, Ruoming Pang, is reportedly leaving the company to join Meta, according to Bloomberg. This marks another high-profile hire by Mark Zuckerberg as he aggressively builds Meta’s AI superintelligence unit.
Pang previously led Apple’s in-house team responsible for developing foundational AI models that power Apple Intelligence and other on-device features. However, Apple has struggled to keep pace with rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and even Meta itself. Its AI capabilities have lagged behind, prompting Apple to consider integrating third-party AI models to improve Siri and other services.
Sources say Pang’s departure may signal deeper issues within Apple’s AI division — with more exits potentially on the horizon.
For Meta, this move is part of a broader recruitment strategy. Zuckerberg has already poached top AI minds from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence in a bid to dominate the next era of artificial general intelligence (AGI).
With Pang’s expertise in on-device AI model design, Meta may be looking to combine cloud-based intelligence with efficient edge AI — a strategic advantage in the emerging AI arms race.
As the battle for AI supremacy intensifies, Meta’s aggressive talent acquisitions could reshape the future of consumer AI.
