Tesla’s First Autonomous Car Delivery: Bold Move or Staged Stunt?
Tesla has made headlines once again—this time with what CEO Elon Musk calls the first autonomous car delivery of a customer vehicle. A driverless Model Y reportedly traveled 15 miles from Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory to the customer’s apartment in South Austin, navigating highways, roundabouts, and unprotected left turns—all without a human onboard or remote assistance.
The drive was powered by the same Full Self-Driving (FSD) software used in Tesla’s limited robotaxi program in Austin. However, once the vehicle reached its destination, it reverted to Tesla’s commercially available FSD (Supervised) version, which still requires driver attention.
While the video footage of the journey looks impressive, questions remain. Was the route pre-mapped? Did Tesla make multiple attempts before recording the successful run? And can this feat be repeated reliably and safely—hundreds or even thousands of times?
The company’s previous FSD demo in 2016 was revealed to be heavily staged. Now, Tesla’s lack of transparency raises concerns about how scalable and safe its autonomous car tech truly is.
Despite a minor hiccup—the car stopping in a fire lane—the achievement is significant. But whether it’s a genuine leap forward or a well-timed PR stunt remains to be seen.
