xAI Releases Grok 3 API: Elon Musk’s AI is Now Live for Developers
Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has launched the API for its flagship model, Grok 3. Now available in two versions Grok 3 and the lighter Grok 3 Mini the model can reason and analyze images and text.
Pricing starts at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens for Grok 3, and $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens for Grok3 Mini. Faster access comes at a premium.
It has competition from Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro and Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 which offer similar or better performance at similar prices. There are also concerns around xAI’s context window limitations and benchmark claims as the current API maxes out at 131,072 tokens, below the previously advertised 1 million-token context.
Originally marketed as an unfiltered and politically neutral AI, Grok’s stance has evolved with updates and has some political leanings and content moderation issues. Musk plans to make Grok more neutral in future updates.
With Grok now available via API, xAI is in the AI game, competing with the big players and opening up its conversational tech to the world.
