Space Startups Merge to Revolutionize Telescope Technology with Observable Space
Introduction
OurSky and PlaneWave Instruments have merged to form Observable Space Startups, the new company building the next generation of telescopes. This merger combines OurSky’s advanced space observational software with PlaneWave’s high-quality telescopes to offer a more integrated and accessible solution for space exploration and observation.
The Problem
Upfront Ventures partner Nick Kim saw the inefficiencies of traditional telescope operations firsthand. PlaneWave makes great telescopes but setting them up and capturing images took hours because of outdated and fragmented software. This highlighted the need for a one-click solution – exactly what OurSky and PlaneWave have now created with Observable Space.
What Observable Space Brings to the Industry
The new company intends to simplify the use of telescopes by integrating software and hardware into one platform. With their US-based manufacturing capabilities, Observable Space is uniquely positioned to serve major institutions like NASA, US Space Force and leading universities.
Key Features:
-
Seamless Integration: No more third party software needed by combining OurSky’s observational data platform with PlaneWave’s high precision telescopes.
-
New Market Expansion: Synchronize multiple telescopes worldwide for more observational power.
-
Affordable and Accessible Tech: Make high end telescopes more user-friendly for enthusiasts, research institutions and government agencies.
Growth and Industry Impact
A growing space economy needs satellite monitoring, communications and defense. Observable Space companies are well positioned to help. Investors like Marlinspike and Embedded Ventures have backed the company recognizing its role in supporting critical infrastructure like GPS and space security.
During a recent demo at Mount Wilson Observatory, the company found a lost spacecraft in minutes using their integrated platform showing the efficiency and reliability of their technology.
Future
Observable Space Startups has around 100 employees across Michigan, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. With $11 million in funding including investment from In-Q-Tel (the CIA’s nonprofit strategic investment arm) the company is already generating revenue and moving quickly in the space industry.
Conclusion
Space enthusiast, researcher or government agency – Observable Space is building the future of astronomy and space observation.
