The Exploration Company Raises $160M to Build Europe’s Reusable Space Capsule
The Exploration Company, a Europe-based startup operating from Germany, France, and Italy, has raised $160 million in a Series B funding round. This investment marks a significant step towards creating Europe’s first reusable space capsule, Nyx, designed to compete with the U.S.-dominated space transportation market.
Nyx: Aiming for ISS Missions by 2028
Nyx will make its first trip to and from the International Space Station (ISS) in 2028, carrying 3,000 kilograms of cargo. Huby, Reichstat, and Vine started the company three years ago with the aim of becoming a reliable space transportation alternative.
Pioneering Privately Funded Space Innovation
Unlike SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, which received substantial NASA funding, The Exploration Company’s Nyx is predominantly supported by private investors. This $160 million round, led by Balderton Capital and Plural, also saw contributions from Bessemer Venture Partners, NGP Capital, and European sovereign funds like French Tech Souveraineté.
“We are the first company to achieve this level of funding primarily from private investors,” said Huby.
Growing Partnerships with ESA and Commercial Developers
The startup has made significant progress with the European Space Agency (ESA), securing a €25 million ($27 million) LEO Cargo Return Service Contract to develop cargo return capabilities by 2026. On the commercial side, the company boasts a $770 million contract backlog, largely from partnerships with private space station developers such as Vast, Axiom Space, and Starlab.
Demonstration Missions Underway
While the first demonstrator vehicle experienced challenges during Ariane 6’s maiden flight, The Exploration Company is planning its second mission, Mission Possible, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 next year.
Competing with SpaceX: The Long-Term Vision
Acknowledging SpaceX’s dominance, Huby stated, “We respect what SpaceX has achieved but believe the world needs more competition. We’re starting small but aiming big.”
As The Exploration Company builds momentum, it represents Europe’s ambitious answer to the evolving landscape of space exploration and transportation.
