Mukesh Ambani Passes ByteDance Co-Founder Zhang Yiming to Reclaim Asia's Richest Title

Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, is once again the wealthiest person in Asia. He has moved past Zhang Yiming, the co-founder of ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok.

The shift was reflected in Forbes' Real-Time Billionaires List, which showed Ambani's estimated net worth climbing by $8.5 billion to $88.8 billion, according to a report by IBTimes India. The 10.5% gain placed him 23rd among billionaires worldwide in rankings updated on November 3.

How the Asian Wealth Rankings Changed

Zhang Yiming, who previously served as ByteDance's chief executive, now has an estimated net worth of $84 billion. That leaves him roughly $4.8 billion behind Ambani in the latest figures.

Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, follows closely with an estimated fortune of $80.1 billion. The three men now make up the top tier of Asia's wealthiest individuals, with less than $9 billion separating first from third.

Zhang's wealth is tied largely to ByteDance, whose global reach rests heavily on TikTok's popularity. Ambani's fortune, by contrast, is linked to a publicly traded conglomerate, which means it can move quickly with share prices.

Record Quarter Sends Reliance Shares Higher

The immediate trigger was a rally in Reliance Industries stock, which rose nearly 12% on Monday, November 2. That single-day move added more than $19 billion to the company's market value.

Investors were responding to Reliance's results for the July-September quarter of fiscal 2027, its best quarter on record. Consolidated revenue grew 28% year on year to ₹3.62 lakh crore, EBITDA rose 24% to ₹62,409 crore, and net profit climbed 34% to ₹29,550 crore.

The oil-to-chemicals division did much of the heavy lifting. Its revenue increased 44.2% to ₹2.32 lakh crore, while its EBITDA jumped 67.9% to ₹25,203 crore.

Analysts Turn More Positive

Following the earnings release, brokerage Avendus Spark raised its rating on Reliance from 'Reduce' to 'Add'.

According to Bloomberg, that upgrade meant no analyst covering the stock carried a 'Hold' or 'Sell' recommendation, a situation the company had not seen since 2017. Broad analyst agreement of this kind is uncommon for a company of Reliance's size and complexity.

Jio Platforms Listing Adds Momentum

The rally also built on the market debut of Jio Platforms, Reliance's telecom and digital services subsidiary. Its shares rose 27% on their first day of trading on the National Stock Exchange on October 28.

The initial public offering raised $3.2 billion at an estimated valuation of about $106 billion, making it the largest IPO ever in India. Reliance still owns roughly 66% of the business.

Jio runs India's largest mobile network and counted more than 533 million subscribers as of June 2026. Its reception on the market has reinforced investor confidence in the group's digital ambitions.

A Conglomerate Spanning Many Industries

Reliance was founded in 1957 by Dhirubhai Ambani, Mukesh Ambani's father. Over the decades it has grown from its industrial roots into petrochemicals, oil and gas, telecommunications, retail, media and financial services.

It remains India's most valuable listed company, with a market capitalisation above ₹17 lakh crore.

What the Shift Signals for Investors and Founders

The reshuffle at the top of Asia's rich list shows how closely founder wealth tracks market sentiment. A strong quarter and a successful subsidiary listing were enough to reorder the rankings within days.

For the technology sector, the contrast is notable. Zhang built his fortune on a consumer app with global scale, while Ambani's latest gains came from a mix of legacy energy businesses and a digital arm now valued in public markets.

The Jio listing also demonstrates that spinning off a high-growth unit can unlock value for a parent company, a lesson that large groups across Asia are likely to watch closely.
