Facebook Revives the Classic ‘Poke’ Feature to Engage Younger Users
Facebook is bringing back one of its oldest and quirkiest features — the poke. Once a playful way to grab a friend’s attention, the poke is now making a comeback with a modern twist designed to appeal to younger audiences.
Meta has added a dedicated poke button directly on user profiles, making it easier to send a nudge. Recipients are notified instantly, and users can even track their interactions on the facebook.com/pokes page. This new feature includes a poke count system, showing how often friends poke each other. Similar to Snapchat’s streaks, users can unlock icons like fire emojis or “100” as their poke count grows.
The revival is part of Meta’s broader effort to boost Facebook engagement and attract Gen Z users, who are used to gamified features on platforms like TikTok and Snapchat. Interestingly, the small poke updates in early 2024 already led to a 13x increase in activity, proving nostalgia and novelty can still drive growth.
While Facebook never defined what a poke really means, whether it’s for fun, flirting, or just being annoying, the feature’s return signals Meta’s commitment to keeping its platform fresh and engaging.
With competition rising and younger demographics drifting to other apps, the return of the poke could be Meta’s attempt to combine nostalgia with social gamification to win back users.
