OpenAI Raises $11 Billion at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation After Scaling Back Its Target

OpenAI has completed a new funding round that values the ChatGPT developer at $1.25 trillion, a figure no private company has reached before. The round brought in $11 billion, according to Bloomberg.

The valuation is roughly 47% higher than the one OpenAI secured just eight months earlier, when it raised $122 billion at $852 billion in March. The increase arrives at a difficult moment, with technology stocks under heavy pressure and political sentiment turning against large AI infrastructure projects.

A Smaller Round Than OpenAI First Planned

The headline valuation hides a more complicated fundraising effort. Reports from the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal last week indicated that OpenAI had originally sought $30 billion at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion.

Market conditions pushed the company to adjust those plans. OpenAI is still courting additional investors, and further commitments could lift the round's total to as much as $20 billion, according to a report by The Tech Buzz.

Even so, the reduced goal suggests the climate for mega-rounds has changed significantly since OpenAI began planning this raise.

Data Center Politics Weigh on the Backdrop

The round closed shortly after OpenAI abandoned its practice of requiring nondisclosure agreements during data center negotiations. That shift followed midterm elections in which voters in several communities rejected AI infrastructure proposals.

OpenAI's chief financial officer has continued to back the company's expansion plans despite the resistance. To ease tensions with local officials, the company has pledged to cover power costs and to give communities a say in how projects move forward.

The underlying need is unlikely to fade. Building and operating large language models requires enormous computing capacity, and OpenAI is trying to expand quickly as Microsoft, Google and Meta also invest billions in their own AI efforts.

Where the Valuation Places OpenAI

At $1.25 trillion, OpenAI is now valued above Tesla and close to Amazon, placing it in the same tier as Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia. That comparison is notable because OpenAI remains unprofitable.

Investors appear to be wagering that OpenAI's position in large language models, along with the consumer recognition of ChatGPT, will produce lasting revenue as businesses adopt AI more widely. The company has shared few financial details publicly, leaving outsiders to judge that bet largely on faith.

Rivals Keep Up the Pressure

Competition has intensified while OpenAI finalized its round. Anthropic and Google remain major challengers, and Perplexity recently introduced Teammates, a set of AI agents aimed squarely at workplace tools like those OpenAI offers.

Perplexity has also acquired Pierre Computer to strengthen its coding capabilities. Elsewhere in the AI supply chain, inference infrastructure startup Fal raised $1.3 billion at a $16 billion valuation.

Large Rounds Continue Despite the Selloff

OpenAI is not the only company pulling in big checks. Drone delivery firm Zipline recently raised $1.5 billion at a $21.5 billion valuation, and fintech company Revolut reached a $115 billion valuation through a secondary share sale.

Those deals show that investor appetite for established, fast-growing private companies has held up better than public markets might suggest. Still, OpenAI's raise sits in a category of its own in terms of scale.

What the Raise Signals for Founders and Investors

The deal shows that investors remain willing to pay record prices for what they see as category-defining AI companies. It also shows limits: even the most closely watched startup had to scale back its ambitions when markets turned.

For founders, the lesson is that timing and conditions still shape outcomes at every level. For OpenAI, the larger question is whether it can convert its capital advantage into revenue strong enough to support a valuation that exceeds almost every company in the world.
