Norwegian Startup Factiverse Combats Disinformation with AI
In an era where online disinformation is shaping public opinions on critical issues like elections, public health, and climate change, the Norwegian startup Factiverse is stepping up with innovative AI solutions. This forward-thinking company, founded in 2020, aims to tackle the growing problem of misinformation with a robust business-to-business (B2B) tool designed for real-time fact-checking across text, video, and audio content.
Award-Winning AI Technology
The best pitch for Security, Privacy, and Social Networking went to Factiverse at TechCrunch Disrupt Battlefield 200. In contrast to large language models like GPT-4, its AI is based on information retrieval, rather than generative methods.
This unique model is trained on high-quality, credible data sourced from trusted fact-checkers and reliable institutions worldwide. By avoiding the pitfalls of “junk food data,” Factiverse ensures its AI behaves like an experienced researcher, providing precise and credible results.
Real-Time Fact-Checking Innovation
Factiverse’s technology analyzes claims in real time, searching across platforms like Google, Bing, You.com, and academic resources. The tool doesn’t just deliver the first results; it evaluates sources for historical credibility and relevance to the topic. This approach allows businesses to save research time while reducing reputational and legal risks.
The startup showcased its potential during the U.S. presidential debates, providing live fact-checking services to several media partners. Its model, capable of analyzing claims in 114 languages, outperforms leading LLMs in identifying and verifying fact-check-worthy claims.
Early Success and Future Goals
Since its launch, Factiverse has raised $1.45 million in pre-seed funding and has partnered with key players, including one of Norway’s largest banks. Amelie and CTO Vinay Setty, an associate professor in machine learning at the University of Stavanger, are driving the startup toward global expansion.
“We aim to be the fastest in the U.S. and continue improving our 80% success rate in claim verification,” said Amelie. Factiverse plans to raise a seed round in 2025 while onboarding new customers worldwide.
Building a Future of Trust
Factiverse invites businesses and investors to join their mission of restoring trust and credibility online. With its groundbreaking technology, the startup is poised to make a lasting impact in the fight against disinformation.
