Meta has extended its Edits video editing app beyond the smartphone, releasing a desktop version for Mac aimed at creators who want a bigger canvas and finer control over their projects.
The move gives Instagram's creator community a dedicated desktop tool from Meta itself, rather than leaving longer or more detailed editing work to third-party software. According to a report by Moneycontrol, the Mac app keeps much of what the mobile version offers while layering on features built for a mouse, keyboard and larger screen.
What Carries Over From the Mobile App
The core of Edits remains familiar on the desktop. Users can stitch together several video clips and audio tracks, add visual effects and pull music from the app's built-in audio library.
Exports remain free of watermarks, matching the mobile experience. Finished videos can also be posted straight to Instagram from within the app, removing the step of moving files between programs.
Desktop Tools Built for Detailed Editing
The headline addition is a multi-track timeline, which lets creators organise and adjust the separate layers that make up a video. This kind of timeline is standard in professional editing software and is far easier to manage on a larger display.
The Mac version also supports keyframes, which creators can use to build animations and transitions with more precision. Audio waveforms are displayed so editors can line up cuts with the beat of a track.
Colour Grading and Workflow Controls
Meta has included tools for splitting, cutting and trimming footage, along with colour wheels, curves and log conversions for colour grading. Log conversion is especially relevant for creators who shoot in flat colour profiles on higher-end cameras and phones.
Keyboard shortcuts and support for custom fonts round out the package. Together, these features are meant to speed up repetitive tasks and give creators more say over the look of their videos.
A Direct Challenge to CapCut
Meta introduced Edits last year as a rival to CapCut, the popular editing app owned by TikTok parent ByteDance. CapCut has become a go-to tool for short-form video creators, and Meta has a clear interest in keeping Instagram creators inside its own ecosystem.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on the company's most recent earnings call that Edits now has more than 50 million active users. The desktop launch is part of a broader push to expand what the app can do and draw in creators working on more ambitious projects.
Cross-Device Editing Still to Come
Meta has confirmed that more desktop features are in the works. Among them is the ability to start a project on one device and pick it up on another, moving between the Mac and mobile versions without losing progress.
The company has not given a timeline for when this cross-device capability will arrive.
What It Means for Creators and the Market
For creators, a free, watermark-free desktop editor tied directly to Instagram lowers the barrier to producing more polished content. It may also reduce reliance on paid editing suites for everyday social video work.
For the industry, the launch signals that the competition between Meta and ByteDance now extends well beyond feeds and algorithms into the tools creators use to make their videos. Seamless syncing between phone and desktop, once it ships, could become a key factor in which platform creators choose to build on.
