Muhammad Hunain, the founder and chief executive of Melagen Labs, has been named a finalist for Playmaker of the Year at the 2026 Global Space Awards.
The recognition places the young company's leader among a small group of people being honoured for steering the direction of the space industry. Melagen Labs is focused on a long-standing engineering problem: protecting spacecraft and their electronics from cosmic radiation.
A Shortlist Drawn From Across the Space Sector
This year's Global Space Awards feature 40 finalists spread across eight categories. Together, the categories are meant to celebrate the individuals, companies and partnerships influencing how the global space economy develops.
The Playmaker of the Year category focuses on individuals whose leadership and vision are setting the course for the industry. Hunain is one of five people shortlisted for the title.
Winners to Be Named in London
The award winners will be announced at The Roundhouse in London on December 11.
Until then, Hunain shares the Playmaker shortlist with four other finalists, all recognised for their influence on the sector.
Melagen Labs and the Problem of Cosmic Radiation
Cosmic radiation is widely regarded as one of the most serious obstacles to sustained human activity beyond Earth. High-energy particles can degrade electronics and pose risks to the hardware that satellites and other missions depend on.
Melagen Labs' main product, called MLC1, is designed to address that threat. It is a patent-pending composite built from a hydrogen-based biomaterial, intended to shield satellites, electronic components and other space hardware.
Roots in the Techstars Accelerator
Melagen Labs took part in the Techstars Washington DC accelerator, run in partnership with J.P. Morgan, in 2024. According to a post published by Techstars, the accelerator is proud to see its alumnus listed alongside some of the most influential figures in space.
Accelerators often highlight milestones like this as a sign that their portfolio companies are gaining traction in competitive, specialised markets.
What the Nomination Signals for Space Startups
For early-stage space companies, industry awards can bring visibility with potential customers, partners and investors in a field where credibility matters a great deal.
Hunain's shortlisting also points to growing attention on the less glamorous but essential layers of the space stack, such as materials and protection, as more hardware heads into orbit. Whether or not he takes the prize in December, the nomination puts Melagen Labs' radiation-shielding work in front of a wider industry audience.
