Apple’s Rumored AI Wearable Signals a New Race in AI Hardware
Apple may be preparing to enter the fast-heating AI hardware market with its own AI-powered wearable. According to a recent report by The Information, the tech giant is developing a pin-style device that users can attach to their clothing—an apparent response to growing competition from OpenAI and other players exploring AI-first consumer hardware.
Apple’s AI Pin: What We Know So Far
The rumored Apple AI wearable is described as a thin, flat, circular disc made from aluminum and glass. Engineers reportedly aim to keep it roughly the size of an AirTag, though slightly thicker to accommodate advanced hardware components.
The device is said to feature:
-
Two cameras (one standard lens and one wide-angle) for photos and video
-
Three microphones to capture audio and support AI-driven interactions
-
A physical button, built-in speaker, and a Fitbit-style charging strip on the back
If launched, this pin would mark Apple’s most direct step yet toward ambient, wearable AI—technology designed to observe, listen, and assist users throughout their day without relying on a smartphone screen.
Competition With OpenAI Is Heating Up
Apple’s rumored move comes shortly after comments from OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, who stated at the World Economic Forum in Davos that OpenAI is likely to unveil its first AI hardware device in the second half of this year. Separate reports suggest OpenAI’s product could take the form of AI-powered earbuds.
Together, these developments highlight a growing shift in the tech industry: AI is moving beyond software and into purpose-built consumer devices. For Apple, accelerating development of an AI pin could be a strategic attempt to avoid falling behind in this emerging category.
Launch Timeline and Market Ambitions
According to the report, Apple’s AI wearable could potentially launch in 2027, with ambitions of producing up to 20 million units at release. If accurate, those numbers suggest Apple sees significant long-term potential for AI wearables, despite uncertainty around consumer demand.
Lessons From Humane AI’s Failure
Still, success is far from guaranteed. Humane AI, a startup founded by former Apple employees, previously attempted a similar concept with its own AI pin. Despite early hype, the product struggled due to usability issues and limited real-world value. Humane shut down operations within two years and sold its assets to HP.
This cautionary tale raises an important question: Do consumers actually want AI pins?
Apple’s Advantage
Unlike startups, Apple brings massive advantages—tight hardware-software integration, a mature ecosystem, and deep consumer trust. If any company can make AI wearables mainstream, Apple may be among the strongest contenders.
While the rumored device is still years away, its very existence signals one thing clearly: the race to define the future of AI hardware has officially begun.
