Alibaba's Qoder Opens Free Daily Access to Unnamed Coding Model Qoduck

Alibaba's AI coding assistant Qoder has quietly added a new model to its lineup, and it comes with an unusual pitch: it is free to use within a daily limit, and nobody will say who built it.

The model, called Qoduck, appeared in Qoder on November 7, according to a report by Startup Fortune that draws on Qoder's own documentation. Alibaba has framed it as a stealth release, leaving developers to judge it on performance alone rather than on a brand name or published test results.

A Stealth Model With No Stated Origin

Alibaba Cloud's official account on X described Qoduck as a stealth model and told followers, "Don't ask where it came from." Qoder's own account echoed that framing and said the model would be free daily for a limited time.

Beyond those posts, the announcement is sparse. Qoder states that the model's identity is undisclosed and that more details will be shared at a later point. No parameter count, architecture or benchmark results have been published.

Who Qualifies and How the Allowance Works

The documentation is more detailed than the social media teasers. Individual users on the Free, Pro Trial, Lite, Pro, Pro+ and Ultra plans are eligible. Team and Enterprise customers are excluded from the promotion.

Access requires no sign-up. Users simply select Qoduck from the model picker in Qoder International. Within the daily allowance, requests to Qoduck consume no credits, regardless of the thinking intensity chosen.

Paid subscribers receive a larger daily allowance than free users, although Qoder has not disclosed the exact amounts for either group. Once the allowance is exhausted, usage is billed at half the standard rate, and the quota resets every day.

A Promotion, Not a Permanent Price

Qoder's documentation describes the end date of the free period as yet to be determined and says it will be announced ahead of time. That makes the offer a temporary promotion rather than a lasting pricing change.

The company has also cautioned that demand is high and that responses may slow down during peak hours. Early users have reported similar delays, according to the report.

Developers Speculate About Qwen 4

Many developers have concluded that Qoduck may be an unreleased version of Alibaba's next Qwen model. Their reasoning leans on the half-rate billing, a reported context window of 1 million tokens and the timing of the launch.

On November 6, a day before Qoduck appeared, Qwen's official account posted a short teaser reading "The becoming begins." Separately, a change merged into Qwen's coding tool repository on October 28 listed qwen4 models with a 1 million token context.

None of this has been confirmed. Neither Alibaba nor Qoder has disclosed the model's size or design, and the 1 million token figure comes from users rather than official documentation. For now, the Qwen 4 theory remains speculation.

What Developers Should Weigh Before Switching

For existing Qoder users, trying Qoduck costs little beyond time, since the daily allowance does not draw on paid credits. Testing it on real codebases and during normal working hours is the most practical way to judge both quality and speed.

For teams comparing Qoder with alternatives such as Cursor, Claude Code or GitHub Copilot, the release offers little hard evidence so far. No independent benchmark had been published at the time of the report, and the long-term price of the model is unknown.

Enterprise buyers face additional uncertainty. The company has not said whether Team and Enterprise customers, who are shut out of the current promotion, will eventually get access to the model.

What Comes Next for Qoduck and Its Users

Stealth launches let AI companies collect real-world feedback without staking a brand on early results, and free access is an effective way to draw developers into a tool. The trade-off is that users are evaluating a product without knowing its source, its benchmarks or its eventual cost.

The next meaningful update is likely to be either Alibaba identifying the model or Qoder announcing when the free allowance ends, with the documentation promising advance notice of the latter. Until then, founders and engineering teams may find Qoduck worth experimenting with, but it offers little basis yet for long-term tooling decisions.
